Beginner Clinic at Lake Lehow

06/20/2020 @ 8:30 am - 2:30 pm

The Beginner Clinic will occur at Lake Lehow on June 20, 2020. Signups are now open! Click “Sign me up!”. Limited to 18 attendees.

Lake Lehow is a private stocked lake that located in Littleton, CO, at the east end of the Waterton Canyon parking lot.   It is south of Chatfield State Park. The property is owned by Denver Water and is managed by Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW).

CPW is allowing up to 25 people, socially distanced + masks.  This will include 18 beginners and 7 instructors/volunteers.

Currently, Denver Water has closed Waterton Canyon indefinitely, so the main gate will be locked.  But … we have access – but the public does not.

Because of the main gate restriction, please only sign up if you can commit to being at the clinic for the entire duration, 8:30 – 2:30 pm.  Except for an emergency situation, the gates will be locked to the public.

Agenda for Saturday June 20, 2020

Volunteers arrive 8:15 am

8:30-9:00 am           – Arrival and rig up (no flies yet, just yarn)

9:00 am                    – Waterton Canyon and Lake Lehow gates are closed/locked up.

All participants and volunteers must be checked in by then.

9:15-10:00 am        – Casting practice

10:00-12:00 pm      – Fishing on Lake Lehow

12:00-1:00 pm        – Lunch at the Pavilion – bring your own lunch and drinks

1:00-2:00 pm          – Riverside Visit on the South Platte

Depending on the flow, we can go look at the river, possibly seine for bugs, talk about water features and reading the water.

Break into smaller groups with the volunteers to learn about the river.

And river safety!

2:00 pm                  – Wrap up, put away equipment

2:15 or 2:30            – Reopen the locked gates and we all leave Lake Lehow.

Bring – your own rod/gear, flies, net, water, food for snacks and lunch as needed, polarized sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, rain gear, etc.  Waders are not needed, as we will only be fishing at the lake.   Sturdy shoes/hiking boots are recommended, as you may be standing on or around boulders.  Dress according to the weather reports.

If you do not have a rod – buy/get one, borrow one from a friend or neighbor, perhaps rent from a fly shop (if they are renting out gear yet).  Due to COVID-19, CWF will not be loaning out rods.

Flies that could work – damsel flies (nymph and dry), squirmy wormies, san juan worms, chironomids, pheasant tails, prince nymph, wooly buggers, hoppers, beetles, ants, adams, and any lake fly.

Fish species include trout, blue gill, bass, catfish and a really big turtle.
