Description: Colorado Women Flyfishers has set aside August 21-23, 2020, for a new adventure:  a flyfishing/horseback riding trip based at Budge’s Flattops Wilderness Lodge which is on the South Fork of the White River. The South Fork of the White River is one of the rivers where it is possible to get a Colorado Grand Slam.  Located at about 9000 ft., it is just beneath the Flattops and runs into the Flattops Wilderness area. Budge’s is a rustic old hunting resort with seven cabins, a main lodge for dining and relaxing in the living room, and a fishing and hunting outfitting business.

POC: Barb Conroy, barbconroy@msn.com, 720-335-0509

Location: South Fork of the White River

Skill Level: All, but know what you are getting into on this remote wilderness adventure! 🙂

Map/Directions: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Budges. This area is accessed by way of Coffee Pot Springs Road, which is an adventure in itself.  Check this link for specific information: https://www.vaildaily.com/news/coffee-pot-springs-road-is-a-drive-waiting-to-be-taken/.  After taking the Dotsero exit from I70, you head up the road along the Colorado River to Coffee Pot Springs Road.  This road is about 17 miles of switchbacks up the side of the Flattops mountains.  It is narrow in places with steep drop-offs so you need to pay attention.  People do pull trailers and 5th wheels up it but it is a problem if you meet someone coming the other way.  Once to the top, it is a drive across the Flattops which get their name because they are flat.  Then you hit the road to Budge’s which is technically a Four-Wheel Drive Road but any all-wheel vehicle with reasonable clearance is fine.   The going is slow because it is rocky and you need to avoid getting high centered.  Depending on your vehicle, the ten miles could take 1 1/2 to 2 hours to drive.

  • SIGN-UP WELL BEFORE  MARCH 1, 2020. Deposits are due to Budge’s by March 1. First come first serve – limited space available.
  • Make a $100 deposit to PayPal online (to the club’s account payments@colowomenflyfishers.org) before March 1. All balances will be due upon arrival at the lodge and must be made in CASH or CHECK ONLY directly to the lodge. • https://www.budgesresort.com , Phone: 1-970-422-1311
  • Those who wish to can reserve a horseback guided flyfishing trip.  This is a day trip.  The cost is $400 per person which includes one night lodging, three meals, horse rental, and a fishing guide.  If someone is camping and wants to participate, their charge for horse and guide will be $300. They will spread us out in groups of 2-4, with some going upstream and some down.  This summer people have caught as many as 30-40 fish in a day on these trips, many in the 16″-20″ category.
  • Those who don’t want to do the guided horse trip have lots of water they can fish, either right through the meadows and the resort or by hiking.
  • If any more adventurous members want to do a drop-off pack trip to Elk Lake up on the Flattops, you will need to contact Budge’s directly for cost and arrangements.  The phone number is 1970-422-1311.
  • They are holding cabins for us until March 1st.  After that, members can call and see if there is still availability.  So please sign-up by March 1, the sooner the better.  You can sign-up by cabin groups or individually and other CWF members will be grouped with you.
  • Also, please indicate if you want the guided horsepack flyfishing day trip so we can make arrangements. Use the form for selecting your options.
  • Cancellation details: They are holding the weekend for us until March 1.  After that, we need to send a $100 per person deposit for those staying at the lodge and or doing the guided horse fishing trip.  The deposit is non-refundable except in situations like a death in the family, major illness, or something like that.  However, they will apply it to a different date.

  • They are reserving  the four cabins that have one double bed and one bunk, which will accommodate three people each.  Because they charge by the person, not the cabin, they want us to put three people in each cabin unless there is a husband/wife couple.  If needed, there are two cabins with a double and and 2 bunks that will hold 5 people each, and one cabin with 2 full beds and one set of bunks that will hold 4 people.    Each cabin has an indoor toilet and running cold water.  There is a separate shower house and dining is in the main lodge.  There is electricity by main generator from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily so you will need to bring flashlights or a lantern for during the night.
  • Cost for lodging is $80 per night per person.  Meals in the lodge are $15 for breakfast, $10 for lunch, and $25 for dinner.  A typical scheduled might be arrive Friday, have dinner ($25), spend night ($80)do horsepack trip on Saturday ($400), spend night (meals and lodging included in horsepack trip), leave Sunday mid-day with breakfast ($15) for a total of $520.00 plus tip for guide.
  • NOTE:  Budge’s  has a satellite phone and there is no internet or cell service for clients except in an emergency.
  • For those who prefer to tent camp, there is a beautiful meadow area on the public land before you get to the actual resort.  There is also a designated campground at Deep Lake which is 10 miles away but on a road that can be driven at 10 miles per hour or less.  Camping close to the lodge is recommended and you can reserve any meal in the lodge dining room at the same cost as those staying in the lodge cabins.  Because of the switchbacks and rough road, bringing a camping trailer is strongly discouraged.
