Day Trip to Poudre Canyon, Cache la Poudre River

POC: Robin Brown,  robin.brown@colostate.edu, 970 222 4428

Location: Ft. Collins,  CO

Information:

  • Two sections of the Poudre are Wild Trout Water. These sections are marked. The first section starts at Pingree Park Road Bridge and continues almost to the town of Rustic. The second section starts at Black Hollow Creek confluence and runs up stream to Big Bend Campground. This upper section has a state trout hatchery by it and provides the best chance for larger fish.
  • 4 or 5 weight rods
  • Layer up if it’s cold!
  • Suggested Flies for this time of year: head light caddis; chew toys; chubbies; sassy solutions; poison tungs; and sparkle wing RS2’s.
  • Other suggestions: Your favorite Blue wing olive, March Brown’s may still be around, Prince nymphs, bead headed pheasant tails, RSII, and green eggs, Olive Caddis nymphs, Breadcrusts, buckskins, La Fontaine’s Sparkle Pupa, Elk hair Caddis, Olive and orange scuds, black or brown woolly buggers, muddler minnows, and Matuka sculpins
  • Areas to fish: In the morning I recommend staying below Mishawaka (the MISH).  The water temps are still cold the higher you go.  For those of you who like to go higher the afternoon would be the time for that. Indian Meadows is a great place, as is above Rustic near Kinnikinic
    1. Around Mile marker 118; large pull-off on the right, river left.  Lots of good places up and down the river.
    2. Go over the bridge after MM118; you will see a long split rail fence on the right.  Good fishing all the way up from there to Gateway park.
    3. Gateway Park will be crowded and it is a fee area.  I don’t recommend it on a Saturday.
    4. As you pass Gateway and wind downhill a bit, you will see a weir/dam on the right. The ¼ mile above that can be productive.
    5. After that I would drive up just past Poudre Park and all waters above the Hewlett Gulch bridge (you will see a sign for the Hewlett Gulch trailhead) is prime water up to the Mish.
  • For those who want to meet for a beer after fishing the MISH is the place!
  • What to bring:  sunglasses; water; lunch/snacks; hat; sunscreen.
  • Check out fishing locations, flies, reports and conditions: St. Peter’s Fly Shop
