Frying Pan Trip

August 3 - August 6

Are you new to the club or needing a little extra help to get started?  Look for “Buddy Here!” in the attendee list above. Reach out directly to Buddies to  coordinate. We can’t guarantee that CWF Buddy Volunteers will always be available on a trip but we’ll try!

Here's the google maps link for Mollie B campground.

Driving from Basalt to Mollie B takes about 20-25 minutes.
Meet Time/Location:

Trip Details:
The Frying Pan River is known for its monster mysis-fed fish just below Ruedi Reservoir. The big boys tend to hang out in the Toilet Bowl, from immediately below the dam, to about a mile downstream. The upper section tends to be the most crowded because of the large fish, but there's Gold Medal fishing and public access along the 8 miles downstream from the dam.

Rocky Fork Day Use Area is generally a good area that can accommodate a lot of people, so for people who have never been there it's a good place to gang fish for a day.

Hatches: Green Drakes, PMDs, caddis, stoneflies, midges, though figuring out when and where is always the challenge. I'll try to provide more info here or via cwftalk

Fly Shops in Basalt:
Taylor Creek Fly Shop, 970-927-4374  https://www.taylorcreek.com
Frying Pan Anglers, (970) 927-3444  http://www.fryingpananglers.com
Mollie B Campground at Ruedi Reservoir is where CWF members usually stay as it's convenient to fishing and has a great view of the reservoir. Make your reservations as soon as possible at http://www.recreation.gov (6 months out, so early February) as campground demand is likely to be high. If Mollie B is full, try the adjacent Little Maud Campground or Ruedi Marina Campground (RV and Trailer only).

There are 2 reasonable motels in Basalt, the Aspenalt Lodge and Basalt Mtn Inn. Again, book early.

I am currently booked Aug 2-6 at the Aspenalt. I may also reserve a campsite at Ruedi depending on how vaccinations are proceeding.
