Gray Reef, Alcova, WY

05/23/2020 - 05/25/2020

This event has been canceled due to Covid-19 Guidelines.

Description: Join us for a CWF classic! The Gray Reef, located 30 miles south of Casper on Wyoming State Highway 220, is one of two Blue Ribbon tailwaters on the North Platte River. It is considered one of the best Rainbow trout fisheries in the country with fish averaging 16-20 inches and plenty of fish in the 10+ pound range. The Reef begins below Gray Reef Reservoir, a small impoundment just below Alcova Reservoir, and flows north towards Casper.

Dates: Memorial Weekend, May 23, 24, 25 2020

POC: Yeida Chang, trips@colowomenflyfishers.org, 720-648-9526

Location: Gray Reef, Alcova, WY

Skill Level: Advanced/skilled. Please be advised… This trip is NOT recommended for beginners who just want to wade without a guide. Conditions can be tricky and variable. Newer fly fishers should plan to fish with guides whether planning to wade or float.

  • Cell coverage is not good there and so PLEASE plan your trip in coordination with others thoroughly, well before leaving for this trip. Finding each other there can be tough, so have your own group figured out and a meetup plan before you go. Please click “Sign me up!” so we  are aware that you are planning to attend. You can always “un-signup” by clicking “please remove me from the list”.
  • A 9′ 5 or 6wt rod, rain gear and flies. 3x or 4x tippet and leaders. Please visit Platte River fly shop for Fishing reports. The best flies for up their are the rock worm and eggs and tiny black midges! So get your tie flying going!
  • Anybody have tips for success you can share with the group? Chime into cwftalk and let us know!
  • Floating the Miracle Mile is quite a treat! There is also fishing available at Fremont Canyon just up the road from the Grey Reef. I would recommend fishing there for at least an afternoon.
  • Flies for the Grey Reef can be found on the Platte River flyshop site. Rock worm, eggs and the Halo midges, orange scud, small black midge(20) works pretty good. www.wyomingflyfishing.com
