POC: Robin Schmidt, 720-339-8879, trips@colowomenflyfishers.org

Location: Leadville, CO

  • Depending on conditions, we can fish Hayden Meadows which is a long stretch near Leadville. There are also 2 parking corrals on the right side of the road, still within the Hayden Meadow stretch, that  have access to the river. The gates on the left side of the road look like they are not open to public but they are – BLM land –  so it is okay to go through the gates (that tend to keep out crowds) to access the river. I’ll drop some pins for access points before the trip. Hopper droppers (Chubbies and hoppers for the upper fly), small stones, pheasant tail, prince nymphs, caddis nymphs, squirmy wormies, Pat’s Rubber Legs, attractor wet flies, zebra midge in various colors, red UV midge.
  • For Brookies and magnificent views, head up to Halfmoon Creek. There are several access points on the creek, but it’s a ton of fun to “ninja” fish for brookies in the ponds up the road. They are super spooky so you really have to sneak up and fish low. Great Tenkara all along Halfmoon Creek and ponds. They usually hit small dries on the surface in the ponds – small Adams or parachutes and other adult midge patterns, small caddis dries, griffith gnat.
  • For lake fishing at Crystal Lakes – Lake flies, like callibaetis, damsel nymph and dries (Adams, parachutes and Caddis). Can shore fish but may occasionally need to step into the water from the bank. Can belly boat
  • Hayden Reservoir just down the road from Crystal Lakes. No belly boats (I don’t believe). Dry droppers with zebra midge in black, green and red, frenchies, and squirmy wormies. Streamers. There are some big browns in the small pond to the west of the reservoir which used to be legal to fish. I definitely recommend streamers  there if it is still open to fishing. In the main reservoir, fish all around the lake but also in the inlet area on the west side of the lake, right in the seam between moving and still water. Use as small a dry as possible that will still hold up your dropper. They will hit both.
