Button Rock Preserve Outing

09/19/2020 @ 7:30 am - 5:00 pm

Hi everyone! Unfortunately, our planned fishing outing on the Poudre River scheduled for September 19th is not going to happen. The expansion of the Cameron Peak wildfire and subsequent closure of the state forest access points have made fishing in Poudre Canyon a no-go for the foreseeable future.

We are bummed, but we still want to fish on the 19th, so we’ve changed the location of our outing to North St. Vrain Creek, at the Button Rock Preserve near Lyons. Button Rock is a really neat spot with walk-in-only fishing access to more than a mile of the North St. Vrain, as well as shore fishing at the small Longmont reservoir.  It’s about an hour’s drive from Fort Collins, and 45 minutes from Loveland.

We’ll plan to meet there at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday the 19th. Be aware that there is limited parking at the preserve and it is likely to fill up on a Saturday morning, so earlier is better—and the fishing is likely to be better early on, too. The Laughing Grizzly Fly Shop in Longmont (303-772-9110) reports that the river is fishing well, but it is on the low side and you do need to be stealthy in your approach and presentation.

Button Rock Preserve is located in a quiet river valley about 7 miles west of Lyons. To get to the preserve from Longmont, travel west on Highway 66 to Lyons. Proceed west on Highway 36 for 4 miles. Turn left at Boulder County Road 80 and continue for 3 miles where you will arrive at a gate across the roadway which restricts vehicle access. Limited parking is provided and the preserve is beyond the gate.

See the below link for more information. Stay safe out there, and hope to see you on the 19th.
