Rio Grande Trip

July 9 - July 11

Are you new to the club or needing a little extra help to get started?  Look for “Buddy Here!” in the attendee list above. Reach out directly to Buddies to  coordinate. We can’t guarantee that CWF Buddy Volunteers will always be available on a trip but we’ll try!

Pauline Ellis, plineellis@aol.com, (970) 769-7743

From the Denver area, take Highway 285 south to Del Norte, then west on Highway 160 to
South Fork, then west on Highway 149 to Creede

Trip Details:

The Rio Grande is a huge river that offers great wade fishing as well as float fishing, provided the water is high enough. Various bug hatches occur throughout the season salmon flies in June, followed by green drakes, and plenty of caddis, stoneflies, PMDs and BWOs.

The 30 Mile Campground area, where a number of Denver area members are staying starting midweek, is smaller stream wade fishing.

Creede has two fly shops: Rio Grande Angler and Ramble House. Also, 8200 Mountain Sports and Rainbow Grocery are in South Fork. They would be great to hit on your way in. (No names mentioned, but I know someone who buys out the flies at Rainbow every time she passes through...😂) And lastly, our friends at Rio Epic are happy to assist us with questions on the fishing side of things. I am glad to help bundle our questions so we do not inundate them.

Will Blanchard, Owner of Rio Epic Outfitters, LLC, is reserving four boats on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11 just for our women’s weekend on the Rio! Some of us have previously floated/waded/fished with Rio Epic guides. We can attest to the quality of the guides and the positive experience of the floats. We willingly return and pay a little more for a top quality experience. (No, there are never guarantees in fishing, but...)

If you are interested in floating Saturday and/or Sunday, please let Pauline know, and she will pass the word along to Will.

Full Day Float Trips are $330 per angler, not including a generous tip for your high performing guide. 😉

Six of the eight Saturday slots are already spoken for, and several women have indicated interest in the remaining slots. Sunday slots are also starting to fill, so don’t delay if you would like to float.

See the link below for more information, including bios of our excellent guides Derek, Rollie, Chris and Owen:

We know we are free to choose from many excellent options for hiring a quality guide service on the Rio. As in the past, Rio Epic owner Will reached out this year to make his guides available for our Women’s’ Float. We are pleased to have partners like Will and Rio Epic to provide quality guide services to our group of women anglers.

Please remember that this is a “Do It Yourself” weekend of fun, friends and fishing! Each of us assume responsibility and liability for all of our accommodation, fishing, dining, socializing, etc. choices and activities, and must consider your COVID protocol.

Having said that, there will be plenty of opportunities for those that choose to gather to do so: to wade, hike, explore, eat, laugh, tell fish tales and of course take advantage of the incredible opportunity to float the Rio with our fine partners at Rio Epic.

Pauline will be a point of communication for those choosing to float with Rio Epic Outfitters, but business transactions for services rendered and “all things float” will be between each individual and Rio Epic.

Pauline is readily available should you have questions.

Oh yes! Let’s get bent, Ladies! 🎣

The closest towns are Creede and South Fork, where there are numerous motels and private campgrounds. Demand in summer is very high, so make reservations early. There are also numerous private cabins/campgrounds scattered throughout the area.

There are various public campgrounds as well, but reservations book out early. Rio Grande CG is first come first serve

A number of Denver area club members are camping at 30 Mile Campground. If you can't find accommodations, it's possible some members will have additional space for another tent, so check on cwftalk if anyone is willing to share.

Note that it takes about 50 minutes to drive from 30 Mile Campground to Creede, and another 25 minutes from Creede to South Fork.

Big reminder to everyone in the group that folks in Creede are on “Creede Speed”. 😂 Restaurants, stores and services open late and close early. It can be hard to get a meal past 8pm!

Another personal opinion: I stay here and enjoy it. Excellent restaurant.
