St. Vrain Creek, Button Rock Preserve – CANCELED

Location: North St. Vrain, Buttonrock Preserve

Meet Location: Button Rock Preserve parking lot
Directions: From Lyons take Hwy 36 north towards Estes Park. Follow 36 about 4 miles, then turn left on Longmont Dam Rd/Co Rd 80. It’s easy to miss this turn so keep an eye out. Longmont Dam Rd turns to dirt, pavement and dirt again. You will deadend at the Buttonrock parking lot.

NOTE: CDOT will be doing construction on Hwy 36 between Lyons and Estes Park  from Mar 9 – Apr 7 and will close Hwy 36 above the Longmont Dam turnoff. If you are coming from Estes Park, you will NOT be able to get to Buttonrock Preserve. You must drive up from Lyons.

  • The creek has mostly small brown trout and some stocked rainbows, great forTenkara and 3-4 weight rods (though you can certainly use a 5-weight).
  • Wading is generally fairly easy, though there are some sections too deep to cross. You can follow the trail and fish from the lower boundary of the preserve just below the parking lot all the way to the RalphPrice Reservoir dam, about a 2 mile stretch.
  • Fishing the Ralph Price Reservoir itself requires a special permit from Longmont.
